Content in Writing
Pat Francis, Kent Institute of Art & Design
This discussion paper proposes one way to improve the content of students’ writing: that is, to work from the centre of their personal
experiences outwards, to more objective viewpoints. This is rather than making formal writing a separate activity to which students often fail to
relate. Keeping a reflective journal enables students to practice and develop their writing skills. Focussing on the content of the writing takes the
debate away from declining standards in grammar, spelling and style, towards a concentration on the essence of art and design and the communication of
its ideas.
